This is always a great race. I ran a 7 second PR but I went out aggressively so I was kind of slow in the last 5k. I just raced and only looked at my watch when it beeped for the miles. This is always my best approach to racing. Anyway first mile is uphill before a few solid downhill miles followed by a couple miles of rollers leading into a nasty 1/2 mile hill at about 7 miles. After that the last couple miles are overall down with a couple of bumps. I got passed by Sara Hall just after a mile and was pretty much 15-20 seconds behind her most of the race. Splits were 5:38, 5:11, 5:25, 5:16, 5:22, 5:37, 5:40, 5:52, 5:31, 2:03 (.4) for the last part. I'm happy I went for it today I just faded a little too much in the last 5k with the big hill. I wanted to run about 30 seconds faster but I'm still happy with this. Met Jeff and Jon Coyle from Idaho (super nice guys) and saw tons of running friends. Always a great morning at this race!

Great race and a real pleasure meeting you today. Hope to see you again in the future.

Good luck to Allison next weekend.

Sara Hall raced? That's one more race than her husband in the last year.

Great time.

Thanks guys. Should have looked over my writing that was a bad first draft! Jeff: it was a pleasure to meet you. Rob: Ryan is in for Boston so expect an announcement that he has dropped out in a couple weeks.

Great race and congrats on a 15k PR Derek this sets you up nicely for Boston.

Nice race Derek. The race is tricky... you have to run the first 10K pretty hard, but its a fine line. I'm hoping to do this one again next year.

You're in a good place right now.

Thanks Ronnie and Jake. Jake: Camryn was 2nd in the kids race and said "just like you Dad". The hits keep coming. Field was weaker this year. You would have been right up there for the big $. Always a terrific race.

Nice race Derek. Sounds like you went out and raced; sometimes that's more fun and more important than being a slave to the watch and pace.

I think if you had two more weeks that fade would've been less too. You're still on a nice upswing.

Solid race! Looking forward to seeing how well you run out in Boston.

Yeah I was surprised to see the winning time in the high 45s. Some of those guys might be saving a bit for Gate River, though.

From jtshad on Mon, Mar 10, 2014 at 11:15:19 from 174.17.146.87

Craig Curley indicated he was running Gate River and did hold back a bit. John ran strong but went out a bit too conservative and would have been in the money if he would have pushed earlier. Still learning the longer distance strategies but he ran solid and moved up well in the second half.
